Program Overview

Medical transcription, also known as MT, is an allied health profession, which deals in the process of transcription, or converting voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals into text format. Medical records have changed considerably over the years. Although many physicians and hospitals still maintain paper records, electronic records are the order of the day. Filing cabinets are giving way to desktop computers connected to powerful servers, where patient records are processed and archived digitally. As well, transcription equipment has changed from manual typewriters to electric typewriters to word processors to computers and from plastic disks and magnetic belts to cassettes, endless loops and digital recordings and even speech recognition software.

In transcribing directly for a doctor or a group of physicians, there are specific formats and report types used, dependent on that doctor's specialty. In most off-hospital sites, MT's assist physicians performing consultations as a second opinion, pre-surgical exams, and as IME's (Independent Medical Examinations) for liability insurance purposes or disability claims. In all these cases, the trained MT displays:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Above-average spelling, grammar, communication and memory skills.
  • Ability to sort, count, and verify numbers with accuracy.
  • Skill in the use and operation of basic office equipment/computer; eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Facility with keeping track of records.
  • Above-average to excellent typing skills.

The Thomas Edison State College Online Medical Transcription Certificate Program offered in collaboration with Pro Train LLC helps students develop the knowledge and skills characteristic of all high-quality medical transcriptionists, specifically focusing on keyboarding, language and grammar, and medical terminology. The program also emphasizes practical experience, and by graduation, students will have transcribed hundreds of authentic dictations, preparing for a quick and successful transition to the workplace.

The program's unique online platform helps students develop employer-valued time management skills by providing them access to all the curriculum and interactive learning tools on an as-needed basis, allowing them to study on a schedule that fits their individual lifestyles. However, students interested in the Online Medical Transcription Certificate Program should be strongly motivated adult learners who can work independently through the readings, consulting with the mentors on an as-needed basis.

Upon passing a final examination, students will be awarded a Certificate in Medical Transcription. Students are given up to one year after registering for the program to pass the examination, which they may take three times. After the one-year period is up, students may register for an extension. Placement assistance and career guidance are offered to graduates of the program as well as tutorial sessions on resume building, successful interviewing, employment testing and various other issues pertaining to finding employment.
