Program Overview
Medical transcription, also known as MT, is an allied health profession, which deals in the process of transcription, or converting voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians and/or other healthcare professionals, into text format. The medical transcription editor must be a highly skilled medical transcriptionist with proven skills in all work types, specialties, accents, and dialects. H/she must possess acute auditory and acoustical sensitivity in coordination with keen hand/eye coordination, as would be expected in an experienced medical proofreader. In addition, the editor must also be proficient in referencing and researching, along with excellent communication skills in order to give consistent constructive feedback to the transcriptionists.
The Thomas Edison State College Online Medical Transcription Editor Certificate Program is offered in collaboration with ProTrain LLC and helps students develop the knowledge and skills characteristic of high-quality medical transcriptionists in addition to the specialized skill set of medical transcription editors. As the demand for well-trained medical transcription editors is rapidly increasing, this program prepares students for both career paths, making them more flexible after graduation. Students focus on keyboarding, medical terminology, language and grammar, and the editing skills required to work with speech recognition technology. The program also emphasizes practical experience—by graduation, students will have transcribed hundreds of authentic dictations, preparing for a quick and successful transition to the workplace.
Students interested in the Online Medical Transcription Editor Certificate Program should be strongly motivated adult learners who can work independently through the readings as well as participate in online discussion. Upon passing a final examination, students will be awarded a Certificate in Medical Transcription Editing.
