Senate President Presents Resolution Recognizing College’s Service to Those Who Serve
TRENTON, NJ(March 13, 2008) —– New Jersey Senate President Richard Codey has sponsored a Senate resolution honoring Thomas Edison State College for its commitment to providing educational programs to the United States military.
On behalf of the New Jersey State Senate, Senator Codey sponsored a Senate resolution that will be read on the Senate floor in the New Jersey State House on Monday, March 17th at 2 p.m. Joining Senator Codey on the Senate floor will be Thomas Edison State College President Dr. George A. Pruitt; Louis Martini, director of Military Education at Thomas Edison State College; and members of the New Jersey Senate.
Enrollments of students at Thomas Edison State College who are serving the U.S. military have risen dramatically over the past few years, making the college one of the largest providers of higher education programs to active duty military personnel in the country. Over the last fiscal year, active duty military enrollments at the College have increased by approximately 47 percent (from 5,797 in FY 2006 to 8,534 in FY 2007). Approximately 8,500 active duty military personnel are currently enrolled at Thomas Edison State College, including thousands who are presently deployed around the world.
In addition, the number of active duty military students graduating from the Thomas Edison State College has increased by approximately 29 percent over the last fiscal year (from 683 graduates in FY 2006 to 879 graduates in FY 2007).
Last year, Thomas Edison State College and McGuire Air Force Base launched a pilot program designed to help military personnel prepare for overseas deployments through courses on Islam, the Middle East, other world cultures and religions, and diversity. The program, which is scheduled to be expanded to Fort Dix, was launched to help make active duty military personnel more culturally aware of the regions in which they are engaged.
The college’s military education program has recently received national recognition. In its December 2007 issue, Military Advanced Education magazine named Thomas Edison State College as one of the top ten schools in the country for servicemembers.
