Dr. Sandra Harris’ own personal philosophy is that once you earn an education, no one can ever take it away from you.
“My inspiration for becoming a mentor was that I could see the ‘handwriting on the wall’ based on the impact of the Internet on so many businesses,” she said. “Within the past five years, there has been an explosion of colleges offering online courses and the number of students taking online courses has increased tremendously.”
Harris said she likes the personal contact associated with online courses. The courses she mentors at Thomas Edison State College are: Principles of Management, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Managerial Communications and Business Policy.
Students thinking about taking an online course, she said, should start with one course to get acclimated.
“I do advise them that it is necessary to get into the ‘classroom’ several times per week and they must be prepared to spend four to six hours per week on the course,” she said.
Harris spent 15 years at Florida Metropolitan University (FMU), which has several campuses in Florida. During her tenure, she served as distance education coordinator and taught courses in paralegal, computers, business and human resources. In addition, Harris has also taught at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Fla., and Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Harris is a graduate of Cazenovia College, Cazenovia, N.Y.; Nova Southeastern University; and FMU.
She lives in Boynton Beach, Fla. with her husband, Roger.
