Students entering the Nurse Paralegal Studies program should have a current RN license; a minimum of an associate degree and at least 2,000 hours of nursing experience. Exceptions to these requirements need the approval of the paralegal program director.
Upon registration, students are provided with a book list for reading on the six course topics: nurse paralegalism, torts, legal research and writing, technology in the law, litigation and administrative law. During the 39-week online program students are expected to work independently through the reading and participate in online discussions with other students in the program. The course mentor, an expert in the specific area of the law being studied, guides the discussion and evaluates each student’s progress.
The online delivery of the program requires that students have access to a computer and are proficient at using e-mail, communicating online, learning new software programs and conducting online research. The online format ensures that students have the most current information in the nurse paralegal/legal nurse consulting field as they learn the skills needed to succeed in today’s increasingly high-tech paralegal profession.
To earn the Professional Certificate in Nurse Paralegal Studies, students are expected to receive a “P” grade in each of the six courses. Students work through all six courses within the 39 weeks; however, exceptions can be made and the program can be extended with the permission of the program director.
