BSHS Practicum Information

A Practicum Review Form, an official job description and current resume are required of students applying to Human Services degree programs. The practicum work experience must be approved for students to pursue a Human Services degree program. The Associate in Science in Public and Social Services (ASPSS) and the Bachelor of Science in Human Services (BSHS) degrees are designed for students who have at least one year of current work experience (paid or volunteer) in the selected area of study at the time they apply to the College. Appropriate work experiences are required in order to complete the practicum requirements and the degree.

The Associate Level Practicum is the capstone requirement that relates student’s practical experience directly to academic theory.  Students must have significant current experience (within the last 5 years)* in the field of their area of study in order to complete the degree program. This experience must be documented and approved as soon as possible after enrolling. While this experience is usually full time paid employment, the requirement may also be satisfied through documentation of part time or volunteer experience according to the following standards.
  • Six months relevant, full time documented employment
  • Part time relevant documented employment that consists of at least 800 hours total experience.
  • Relevant documented volunteer service, at the appropriate level, that consists of a minimum of 800 hours total experience.
  • Any combination of the above that satisfies the minimum hours of experience 

*Currency requirements may be waived at the discretion of the dean

To enroll in the Associate Level Practicum course, you must have completed:

  • 6 credits of English composition
  • 6 credits in Social Science
  • At least 12 credits in Option


The Advanced Level Practicum is the capstone requirement that relates student’s practical experience directly to academic theory. Students must have significant current experience (within the last 5 years)* in the field of their area of study in order to complete the degree program. This experience must be documented and approved as soon as possible after enrolling. While this experience is usually full time paid employment, the requirement may also be satisfied through documentation of part time or volunteer experience according to the following standards:

  • One year relevant, full time documented employment
  • Part time relevant documented employment that consists of at least 1500 hours total experience
  • Relevant documented volunteer service, at the appropriate level, that consists of a minimum of 1,500 hours total experience
  • Any combination of the above that satisfies the minimum hours of experience

*Currency requirements may be waived at the discretion of the dean

To enroll in the Advanced Level Practicum course, you must have completed:

  • 6 credits of English composition
  • 12 credits in Social Science
  • At least 15 credits in the Core Requirements
  • At least 21 credits in Specialization
