President George A. Pruitt



Dr. George A. Pruitt has been president of Thomas Edison State College since 1982.

Prior to coming to the College, he served in executive leadership positions at Illinois State University, Towson State University, Morgan State University, Tennessee State University, and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).  He is active in the formulation of educational policy nationally and within the State of New Jersey.

He has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, Chicago, Illinois; Member, Board of Directors, American Council on Education (ACE), Washington, D.C.; Member, Board of Directors, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), Washington, D.C.; Member, National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI), United States Department of Education, Washington, D.C.; Member, Board of Directors, Sun National Bank, Vineland, New Jersey; Member, Board of Directors, Trenton Savings Bank, Trenton, New Jersey; Chairman, New Jersey Presidents’ Council; Member, New Jersey State Planning Commission, Trenton, New Jersey; Member, Board of Trustees, Rider University, Lawrenceville, New Jersey; Member and Chairman, Board of Trustees, The Union Institute & University, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Advisor, Kellogg National Fellowship Program, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Battle Creek, Michigan.

Dr. Pruitt is Past Chairman and a Member of the Mercer County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Trenton, New Jersey.  He serves as Chairman, Board of Directors, Structured Employment Economic Development Corporation (SEEDCO), New York, New York; Chairman, Board of Directors, Capital City Partnership, Inc., Trenton, New Jersey; and is a Member of the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities (ASCU), Trenton, New Jersey.

He has consulted widely in business and government, as well as within the higher education community.  He has served in an advisory capacity to four Secretaries of Education under three Presidents of both parties.  He is the recipient of four honorary degrees in addition to numerous awards, honors, and commendations. In a study of presidential leadership funded by the Exxon Education Foundation, Dr. Pruitt was identified as one of the most effective college presidents in the United States.  He has an adult daughter, Shayla.  He resides in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, with his wife, Pamela.
