Continuing Studies courses and certificate programs at Thomas Edison State College provide flexible, high-quality, learning opportunities for those adults seeking professional advancement opportunities. Students in these programs are often juggling the competing demands of job, family and education, not to mention the myriad complexities of daily life. For this reason, the successful Continuing Studies student is one who is self-directed and prefers to learn in an online environment.
Continuing Studies programs run the gamut from totally self-paced to more traditional distance learning courses. We also conduct webinars, and in a few cases, real-time conferences and special workshops. Some of our programs are offered in collaboration with other schools or educational partners.
As for the self-paced courses, they are taken at your convenience and at your own speed. Most self-paced courses display information in discrete modules that allow you to digest the information in bite-size chunks. In this way, you progress through the material in an independent fashion with minimal resort to help from a content expert. In addition, you can repeat lessons as often as necessary, reinforcing the material until you have a solid understanding of it. However, in the more traditional, distance-learning courses, a greater premium is placed upon the interaction between mentor and student and that between the students themselves. Here you can expect to participate in forums, chat rooms, discussion groups, etc., but with a fully engaged mentor as educational guide.
Make sure that your choice of program fits your particular learning style and set of expectations. If you have a question about the format of any particular course or program, contact us at spcs@tesc.edu or (609) 777-5642 ext. 2217.
